The Turkish government has cancelled the passports of around 50,000 people to prevent them leaving the country as a crackdown continues following a failed coup.

Efkan Ala, the interior minister, said more than 18,000 have so far been detained over the attempt to oust President Tayyip Erdogan, while thousands of government staff are under investigation. Know more



Australia has moved 1.5 metres, so it's updating its location for self-driving cars : Strewth! Australia will update its latitude and longitude to make sure self-driving cars, drones and tractors know where they're going.

Australia is changing from "down under" to "down under and across a bit".

The country is shifting its longitude and latitude to fix a discrepancy with global satellite navigation systems. Government body Geoscience Australia is updating the Geocentric Datum of Australia, the country's national coordinate system, to bring it in line with international data.

The reason Australia is slightly out of whack with global systems is that the country moves about 7 centimetres (2.75 inches) per year due to the shifting of tectonic plates. Know more

Northern Siberia has been hit with a bout of weird weather, including a heatwave that has led to record-high temperatures. In the Yamal tundra, which sits above the Arctic Circle, temperatures soared to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to the average of 77 degrees this time of the year. Scientists caught off-guard by record temperatures linked to climate change : Record temperatures in the first half of 2016 have taken scientists by surprise despite widespread recognition that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, the director of the World Climate Research Program said.

The earth is on track for its hottest year on record with June marking the 14th straight month of record heat, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said last week.

Temperatures recorded mainly in the northern hemisphere in the first six months of the year, coupled with an early and fast Arctic sea ice melt and "new highs" in heat-trapping carbon dioxide levels, point to quickening climate change, it said. Know more

Gunman shoots doctor at Berlin clinic, not terrorist related : A doctor is in critical condition after being shot by a gunman who subsequently killed himself at a university clinic in Berlin. Police say the situation at the Benjamin Franklin clinic in the southwest of the capital is now under control.

The incident happened at the Benjamin Franklin Clinic, located in the Steglitz district, at around 11:00 GMT.

It emerged that the doctor was shot by the gunman, who later turned the gun on himself. Police say the physician is critically injured and is currently being treated in intensive care. Know more

Google’s quantum computer just accurately simulated a molecule for the first time : Google's engineers just achieved a milestone in quantum computing: they’ve produced the first completely scalable quantum simulation of a hydrogen molecule.

That’s big news, because it shows similar devices could help us unlock the quantum secrets hidden in the chemistry that surrounds us.

Researchers working with the Google team were able to accurately simulate the energy of hydrogen H2 molecules, and if we can repeat the trick for other molecules, we could see the benefits in everything from solar cells to medicines. Know more

Suicide attack kills at least 21 near Baghdad : Hospital sources say death toll likely to rise after bomb goes off as cars wait to enter Khalis, north of capital.

A suicide car bomb killed at least 21 people and wounded more than 32 at the entrance to a town northeast of Baghdad on Monday morning, security sources told Al Jazeera.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast outside Khalis, about 80km from the capital, but the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL) regularly attacks security forces and civilian areas. Know more

Great Barrier Reef Undergoing a 'Complete Ecosystem Collapse,' Scientists Say : Depleting fish populations and corals that are still bleaching in the winter paint a bleak picture for parts of the Great Barrier Reef, which is undergoing a “complete ecosystem collapse,” scientists say.

For a week, Coral Watch chief investigator Justin Marshall surveyed the reefs around Lizard Island in Queensland, according to the Guardian. He said many of the fish species commonly spotted around the coral had completely disappeared. Know more


Protesters burn cars in north Paris suburb on third night of unrest : Protesters burned cars and garbage bins in a suburb north of Paris on Friday, for the third night in a row. The unrest was sparked by the death of a man in police custody earlier this week.

Protests started on Tuesday night after 24-year-old Adama Traore died en route to a police station following his arrest in the Val d'Oise area about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Paris.

An autopsy reportedly found no signs of significant violence on Traore's body but found he had been suffering from a "very serious infection," according to a justice official. Douglas Bader 

Douglas Bader the British RAF fighter pilot who had lost his legs in a flying accident, was shot down over France and captured by the Germans. During his time as a POW, Douglas Bader made as much trouble as possible and escaped in August 1942 , on his recapture by the Germans he was sent to Colditz Castle which provided a more secure prison. Before he was shot down he had claimed 22 German aircraft shot down which was the fifth highest total in the RAF. In 1956 the movie “Reach for the Sky” was based on The Story of Douglas Bader, Hero of the Battle of Britain.”
