A ‘leap second’ will be added to the end of 2016 : Already a leap year, 2016 will drag on a bit longer. International timekeepers are adding a leap second at year’s end.

Because Earth is slowing down a tad, occasionally timekeepers insert another second or two to match Earth’s rotation and the precise atomic clocks. U.S. Naval Observatory’s Geoff Chester says the tides’ interaction with the moon and other factors, including warmer, denser waters from El Nino, cause Earth to take longer to go full circle each day. Medical marijuana use linked to lower prescription drug use : American states that allow their residents to use marijuana for medical purposes have seen a marked decline in prescription drug use among the elderly and disabled, according to a study published Wednesday. Know more


US sanctions North Korea's Kim Jong-un for the first time : The US has sanctioned North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for the first time, accusing him of human rights abuses.

A statement from the US Treasury named Mr Kim as directly responsible for violations in his country.

Ten other top North Korean officials have also been blacklisted. There has been no response yet from the North Korean government. Know more

As Orlando proved, anti-LGBT violence is a global problem. But in Brazil, it’s reached epidemic proportions—often with a gruesomeness that is shocking to even hardened activists.

According to the group Grupo Gay da Bahia, nearly 1,600 LGBT people have been murdered in the country since 2011. By their estimates, a gay or trans person is killed almost every day in Brazil. Know more


Judge asks alleged rape victim 'why couldn't you keep your knees together' : Robin Camp has been suspended for his remarks in the 2014 trial

A judge who asked an alleged rape victim why she “couldn’t keep her knees together” is facing a public hearing to keep his job in Canada. 

During the 2014 trial of Scott Wagner, who was accused of raping a 19-year-old girl over a sink at a party, Judge Robin Camp asked the alleged victim "Why couldn't you just keep your knees together?" and "Why didn't you just sink your bottom down into the basin so he couldn't penetrate you?". India’s top court ordered Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft to ban ads for pre-birth gender tests

Despite the ban on female feticide in India, ads for sex-selection services are still abundant on the web. In a move to end this and help save the girl child, the Indian supreme court has warned Silicon Valley behemoths Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft against hosting ads that violate the country’s ban on prenatal gender testing and sex selective abortion, the Economic Times newspaper reported. The court ordered the three tech giants to stop promoting sex discrimination kits, tools, and clinics. Know more

African wildlife officials appalled as EU opposes a total ban on ivory trade : European commissions’ opposition to a proposed global ban will spell the beginning of a mass extinction of African elephants, warn officials from 29 African states

Wildlife officials in nearly 30 African states say they are appalled by an EU decision to oppose a comprehensive global ban on the ivory trade.

In a position paper released on 1 July, the European commission said that rather than an all-encompassing ban it would be better to encourage countries with growing elephant numbers to “sustainably manage” their populations. Know more
