Jamaica is paying its oil debts to Venezuela with foodJamaica has announced it is going to pay off oil debts it has with Venezuela with food, medication, and fertilizers, instead of cash.

The barter agreement comes at a time when Venezuela is suffering from acute shortages of basic products amid a major economic and political crisis.

Jamaica's government announced the deal last Friday, saying that the transfers will take place in the last quarter of this year and amount to $4 million. Know more


Ireland jails three top bankers over 2008 banking meltdown : Three senior Irish bankers were jailed on Friday for up to three-and-a-half years for conspiring to defraud investors in the most prominent prosecution arising from the 2008 banking crisis that crippled the country's economy.

The trio will be among the first senior bankers globally to be jailed for their role in the collapse of a bank during the crisis.

The lack of convictions until now has angered Irish taxpayers, who had to stump up 64 billion euros - almost 40 percent of annual economic output - after a property collapse forced the biggest state bank rescue in the euro zone. Know more


France has 'shut 20 radical Islam-preaching mosques' : FRENCH AUTHORITIES HAVE shut down around 20 mosques and prayer halls considered to be preaching radical Islam since December, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said today.

“There is no place…in France for those who call for and incite hatred in prayer halls or in mosques, and who don’t respect certain republican principles, notably equality between men and women,” the minister said.

“That is why I took the decision a few months ago to close mosques through the state of emergency, legal measures or administrative measures. About 20 mosques have been closed, and there will be others.” Know more

Home ownership in England has fallen to its lowest level in 30 years as the growing gap between earnings and property prices has created a housing crisis that extends beyond London to cities including Manchester.

The struggle to get on the housing ladder is not just a feature of the London property market, according to a new report by the Resolution Foundation thinktank, with Greater Manchester seeing as big a slump in ownership since its peak in the early 2000s as parts of the capital, and cities in Yorkshire and the West Midlands also seeing sharp drops. Cousin of teen who killed French priest ‘knew perfectly well’ attack was coming, could face terrorism charges : Farid K, arrested after his cousin Abdel Malik Petitjean killed Father Jacques Hamel, 85, last Tuesday in Normandy, was sent to face a judge yesterday with a recommendation from the prosecutor that he be charged with taking part in a “terrorist association with the aim of harming others.”

Farid, 30, hosted his cousin in his flat in Nancy in eastern France for a few days before the attack and “knew perfectly well” that Petitjean was about to carry out an attack, the prosecutor’s office said. He “was fully aware of his cousin’s imminent violent action, even if he did not know the precise place or day”, it added. Know more


Nuclear scientists push for freedom to express views without fear of reprisals : Scientists working for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission have asked their union to negotiate a policy on scientific integrity that would allow them to express their views about nuclear-safety issues without fear of reprisals from management.

The unionized professional employees at the nuclear regulator and two nuclear research facilities – Chalk River in Ontario and Whiteshell in Manitoba – have been negotiating a new contract for the past three years, a process that was significantly delayed as a result of last year’s federal election. A heat wave and near drought conditions occurring in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Western Missouri. The temperature was over 100 degrees and in Kansas it reached 107 degrees which was the hottest temperature the weather station had ever recorded.
