Man arrested on suspicion of murder : A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a US citizen was killed and five other people were injured in a knife attack in central London.

Police believe the attack in Russell Square on Wednesday was "spontaneous", with victims "selected at random".

The woman who died was thought to be in her 60s. The injured people were from Britain, America, Israel and Australia. Know more



Bangladesh cafe Attackers’ bodies still in morgue – Students protest rise in Islamic extremismThe bodies of five Islamists behind a deadly attack on a Bangladesh cafe have still not been claimed a month later, police said Monday, as tens of thousands took to the streets to protest against extremism. Relatives of the men have spoken of their shock and horror at learning of their involvement in the siege in Dhaka’s Gulshan neighbourhood, in which 20 hostages were killed — many of them hacked to death. Italy passes law to encourage all supermarkets to give unsold food to needy : 'The food currently wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people,' says the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation

The Italian government has overwhelmingly backed a new set of laws aimed at cutting down the vast amounts of food wasted in the country each year.

A bill passed by 181 Senators will encourage families to use "doggy bags" to take home unfinished food after eating out and removes hurdles for farmers and supermarkets seeking to donate food to charity. Know more



As Rio Games approach, 1.3 million tickets left unsold : Two days ahead of the opening ceremony at the Olympics, organizers say that 1.3 million tickets remained unsold, an indication that spectator demand for Rio has lagged behind previous summer Games.

As of Friday, 4.8 million tickets for the Games had been sold, out of around 6.1 million tickets on offer, the Rio Organising Committee told Reuters on Wednesday. Demand has been strong for sports such as basketball and swimming, the committee said.

Some 500,000 of the unsold tickets are for soccer matches. Many of those matches are scheduled to be played in stadiums in other Brazilian cities far from Rio. Know more

India is abandoning Monsanto’s GM cotton for indigenous varieties: Indian tribal farmers hold placards as they take part in a demonstration against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to protest against the promotion of multinationals in farming sector by the Indian government at the time in Bhopal, India, 31 March 2012. Farmers staged protests under the campaign 'Hamara Beej Abhiyan' or 'Our Seed Agitation' to protest against Monsanto, the US-based multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation, and other world trade organisations, demanding they leave India. The farmers claimed that one decade has completed for the BT cotton industry accepted in professional farming as a result of which farmers engaged in cotton farming have become helpless and poor by the day and also got debt-ridden and are compelled to commit suicide from time to time. A Chinese lawyer has been sentenced to seven years in prison in the third of a series of subversion trials demonstrating the ruling Communist party’s determination to shut down independent human rights activists and government critics.

Zhou Shifeng was director of Beijing’s Fengrui law firm that took on sensitive cases and represented people who dared challenge the party. Know more

Morgan Freeman 

Morgan Freeman, the academy award winning actor, was involved in a serious car accident on this day. Freeman and a passenger were airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. The accident was not fatal, and despite having injuries Freeman was lucid and speaking when the emergency response arrived on the scene.
